Rugby League returns to Espiritu Santo

Rugby League is set to return to Vanuatu’s second largest island, Espiritu Santo, for the first time in almost three years when the inaugural Vanuatu Icon Reeves Luganville Nines takes place.

The new Nines tournament looks to reintroduce the code to the region after COVID-19 ended both local competitions and the inter-island representative competition.

Taking place at the Lycee de Lugainville Fields, the tournament will feature teams from across Espiritu Santo and the neighbouring Malo island with the top players to be selected for the Sanma Provincial team. The Sanma Provincial team will play a Shefa Provincial side on November 9 to close out the 2021 Vanuatu Rugby League season.

The Luganville Nines is the second Nines tournament run by the Vanuatu Rugby League in 2021, with the Vanuatu Police Forces and Port Vila Warriors recently winning the Port Vila Nines on the Island of Efate.

Rugby League was first established on the island of Espiritu Santo in 2012.
